Private Kindergarten Curriculum in San Diego

The Kindergarten curriculum anchors the academics at Bonita Country Day School. The curriculum has been carefully planned to inspire and excite children to learn. Academic goals of teaching children how to listen, how to think, how to reason, how to organize their thoughts, and how to study are of primary importance. We offer a challenging core educational program based on the academic fundamentals of reading, language arts and math. We are committed to provide an enriched and balanced education through special studies in music, art, science and social studies. The kindergarten bilingual program addresses conversational Spanish with an emphasis on pronunciation and expanding vocabulary.

Bonita Country Day School strongly believes reading skills are the most important aspect of the kindergarten curriculum. We have a carefully structured phonics program that lays the foundation for the solid word recognition skills necessary for the development of strong and accurate reading comprehension. Students learn that reading is an active process and they learn to use various strategies to integrate information from text into their present knowledge base.

Writing instruction focuses on writing as a process. As students learn to write cohesively, clearly and with intent they gain an understanding of grammatical concepts. Reinforcement of these concepts occurs in classroom lessons and in conjunction with a phonetically based spelling program.

Number relationships and operational mathematics form the foundation of the math curriculum. There is a balance between instruction in concepts and factual/procedurals knowledge. The content includes the study of number and operations, geometry and spatial sense, patterns, time and measurement.

Spanish is taught Mondays – Thursdays by our foreign language teacher. Art and music are also taught by specially trained teachers who are experts in their respective areas of instruction.
